Gr. 2^-3. Although this is in the typical easy-to-read format, the story is a little more complicated than some--and the main characters are considerably older. Miss Hildy is a senior-citizen detective who receives 12 pink flamingos for Valentine's Day. She must use her sleuthing skills to discover her admirer, who turns out to be Mr. Herring, the fish store owner. There's nary a kid in sight in this book, but readers should still enjoy trying to identify the smitten suitor. The slightly stylized paintings that give the people and places some heft and dimension are fun to look at, too. Ilene Cooper
